They picked you off the street, all innocent and wild
Wide-eyed and stupid, a lost runaway child
They sold you for a penny, then a nickel, and a dime
Until someone made a fortune which was worth their line of crime

Oh mother Mary pray for us, release us from our sins
Show us the path to righteousness, show us where it begins
I pray someday we’ll find you, and for their crimes we will atone

When nobody was looking you got passed from arm to arm

Until a bird of paradise was a commodity with clipped wings
