Grannies (Solo Demo)

I wrote this song at a workshop songwriting I attended in 2006. The assignment was to write a ‘protest song’. I decided to stay close to home and was inspired by a (hopefully) recognizable everyday situation…

So Close (Solo Demo)

The title is ’stolen’ from Craig Armstrong. The song was inspired by a discussion between friends following a song written by one of them. No matter how close you think you may be with someone, you can still be worlds apart.

Lyrics

GRANNIES

Handbag, handbag, handbag

Last Sunday, at the bakery
I'm convinced she came in after me
When I wanted to order my loaf of bread
She slid in beside me and took the last one,
she took the last one instead

Now, hush, hush,
when I won't get up for you on the bus
And don't complain,
if I won't give up my seat on the train

I object, to grannies cutting in line
I object, to grannies taking what's mine
And I object, to grannies not waiting their turn
And I think grannies have got a lot of things left to learn

Handbag, handbag, handbag

Last Friday, at the grocery store
A little old lady, I'd seen this one before
I stood in line, then I looked away
And before I knew it she was there,
and she was there to stay

So let's not pretend that they're innocent
It's all make-believe, now don't be naïve
And don't be surprised, they're all wolves in disguise
Who'll hit you over the head
With their handbag

I object, to grannies cutting in line
I object, to grannies taking what's mine
And I object, to grannies not waiting their turn
And I think grannies have got a lot of things left to learn

Handbag, handbag, handbag
